Spinal FusionWhat Is a Spinal Fusion Procedure? Sometimes when the bones of the spine (vertebrae) become unstable or weakened, they can move and cause pain and irritation in nerves. If the problem is severe enough, spinal fusion surgery may be an option to correct the problem. In a spinal fusion procedure, the surgeon will actually gather bone material, either from the patient or from another source, such as a cadaver. This bone material, called a bone graft, will then be implanted in between two or more vertebrae to help fuse or heal the vertebrae together. In order to help stabilize the fusion site while healing takes place, the surgeon will often place metal screws, bolts, plates, or rods in the area to provide support. These items, which are typically composed of nonmagnetic materials, are referred to as hardware. The figure below shows both pictures of hardware and spinal fusion procedures with hardware. Please note that dj Orthopedics does not manufacture or represent the products shown.
How Does the CMF SpinaLogic® Device Help to Heal a Spinal Fusion Procedure? In a certain number of people who undergo spinal fusion surgery, healing does not automatically take place. This can occur for a number of reasons, but the more common factors that contribute to a lack of healing are things like smoking, obesity, and diabetes mellitus. Since risk factors for healing may exist, it can be beneficial to use an external bone growth stimulator after surgery. CMF SpinaLogic has been shown to aid the bodys natural healing process so that the fusion site can mend. The electromagnetic field sent out by the device tells the bone cells to essentially wake up and start doing their job bone growth. For more detailed information on the physiological processes initiated by the CMF OL1000 and CMF SpinaLogic and how this benefits patients, please visit the Basic Science and Product areas of the Medical Professionals section. | |||||||
